Krucial co-founder and CTO Kevin Quillien has been announced as a speaker at Aquaculture UK 2022, the biggest UK trade event in the industry’s calendar. Kevin will be on the panel at the ‘Solving the connectivity challenge and digitising aquaculture’ session, to be hosted by the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre on Wednesday 4 May at 2pm, and featuring a host of experts from academia and industry.

The session will ask how can aquaculture digitise operations to succeed, and how important is connectivity in solving that puzzle?

The ambitions of the aquaculture sector are clear– to produce sustainable, affordable sources of protein that can feed the world for generations to come. Achieving those goals means an increasing reliance on innovative new technology – but without the connectivity infrastructure in place to fully benefit from that new technology, how can the sector’s ambitions ever be fully realised?

With so many farms located remotely, achieving seamless connectivity to digitise operations fully is an ongoing challenge. Collecting the most reliable and up-to-date data can help businesses make timely and informed decisions, especially when using remote assets and operations, so the challenge should be worth the result.

Using smart devices, like sensors, to collect data on metrics from water temperature to water salinity allows operators to make more informed decisions more quickly – based on the conditions as they are. This can result in a lower carbon footprint, better understanding of feed amounts required, and improved fish welfare, as well as assist in the transition to a more proactive approach to preventative measures that can avoid problems arising.

Different fish farms are at different stages in their journey towards digitisation, with some using older equipment, others using more modern technology, and many using a combination of both. Understanding how new approaches, as well as new connectivity options, can fit into existing processes when looking at how to further digitise operations is crucial.
